Why do we gotta take so much
English? Why, indeed. If I had a dime for every time I had heard a student
mangle the language in the process of asking me that question, I would never
have to
answer it again, because I'd already be rich. Instead, I'm an English teacher.
It's fun, actually, and when I hear even a single student improve his use of the language in some small way, by using "as", for example, where "like" won't answer, I think I am, like, rich. (I'm wrong, of course, but only in the material sense.) So if pressed, I guess I would have to say that this, for me, is what will have to pass for a personal mission statement; that is, to improve every student's use of language in some small way before they're done with me.
